Janakpur Dham

The city of Ponds, Janakpur, has more than seventy pounds and is famous worldwide for Janakpurdham. Ancient Ramayana is incomplete without Janakpurdham, the birthplace of Goddess Sita (Janaki), and the place of marriage of Lord Ram & Sita. Historically known as Mithilanchal, Janakpur is the origin of ancient Maithili culture.

 

Birthplace of Chhath festival, people in Janakpur speak Maithili. Mithila Paintings, created by women in Janakpur, has its international market and value. Historically significant, Lord Buddha and Vardhamana Mahavira also lived in Janakpur in ancient times.

 

Hindu dominated city, one of the UNESCO’s tentative sites, Janakpur, is famous for Janaki Mandir, which is the essential model of Koiri Architecture. Janaki Mandir, known as Nau Lakha Mandir (meaning 9 Lakhs), required nine lakhs for its construction and has sixty rooms, each decorated with colorful paintings, engravings, and Nepal’s flag. Entirely built with stones and marbles, 3-storied Janaki temple is an example of mixed Mughal & Koiri domes, with bright white color, and mind-blowing windows and turrets. Janaki Mandir alone brings thousands of pilgrims and travelers from all over the world, especially from India and Sri Lanka to Janakpur.

 

Other popular places in Janakpur, with historical background, are Ram Mandir (built-in 1700 AD), Jaleshwar, Ram Sita Vivah Mandap, Dolakha Bhimsen Mandir, Ganga Sagar, Dhanush Sagar, and Ratna Sagar Mandir.

 

Janakpur is famous for Indian cuisines, along with vegetarian and Jain food. Spring and Fall are the best seasons to travel Janakpur with August being the peak month for tourists, mainly pilgrims. Winter in Janakpur is extreme cold, with temperature as low as 14.3°C.

 

You can easily reach Janakpur with flights as well as public road transport. It has a domestic airport of its own, and everyday flights from Kathmandu. There are plenty of accommodations ranging from different prices for all kinds of tourists. The only complain tourists make the unmanaged area around the Janaki temple and lack of cleanliness of the public areas.
