Tamu Lhosar

Tamu Lhosar is the New Year day of different ethnic groups of Nepal like Tamang, Magar, Gurung, and some other Himalayan communities. The festival falls in the month of December or January depending upon the lunar calendar. It is an exciting festival for these communities and calls for joy and togetherness.

 

The festival is all about recalling good times, gathering with families and relatives, visiting monasteries, and praying for prosperity and happiness. Monasteries are decorated with beautiful colors, lights, and flowers. People also clean their houses, decorate it, and raise a flag on its roof.

 

Every house organizes party and invitations are circulated among friends and relatives. They cook delicious traditional foods, play music, wear traditional or new clothes, dance, and enjoy togetherness. The Government declares a public holiday on this day and lets people enjoy the festival with families.

 

The festival marks the beginning of Tamu Sambat, which is a special calendar year of different communities like Gurung. They organize parades in a traditional way, wear traditional dress, and perform a traditional dance. Buddhist shrines and monasteries receive plenty of visitors to this day.

 

In order to get to know about the festival more, one can visit Tundikhel Ground in Kathmandu where the festival is celebrated with dazzling decorations, colorful stalls, traditional performances, with flooding people.

 

Villages with Gurung, Magar, or other communities that celebrate Tamu Lhosar are also full of joy and celebrations. One can enjoy the festival in the local style with these people, and be part of the grand feast and performances.
