Jomsom, commonly known as Dzong-Sampa or New Fort, lies in the Gharpaihong Rural Municipality of Mustang District of Gandaki Province. Lying at an altitude of around 2,700 m from sea level, Jomsom extends over the banks of Kali Gandaki, with a diverse landscape and culture. Its route provides marvelous insight into the life of various ethnic groups. The star attraction of the route is the trek through the world’s deepest gorge, carved by the Kali Gandaki River, which originates in the Tibetan Plateau and flows eventually into the Ganges of India.

The region is inhabited by Thakalis, Gurungs, Magars, and Lopa - people with Tibetan origin. Having unique customs and attire, people of this region are friendly and welcome tourists with broad smiles and provide warm hospitality.
Tourists, who come to Jomsom, also travel to Muktinath, which is one of the most popular and challenging pilgrimages of Nepal, for both Hindus and Buddhists, lies just 24 km from Jomsom. People believe, bathing in the temple’s waterspouts guarantees salvation after one’s death.
One of the unique festivals of Nepal, Yartung, which is a thrilling horse race, falls in September. Most of the tourists visit Jomsom in September to witness this unique and exciting festival, performed in Tibetan style, which lasts an entire week.
Jomsom is accessible via a local bus from Kathmandu and Pokhara. There are also flights from Kathmandu and Pokhara, that will drop you in the domestic airport of Jomsom, which is famous for its outstanding and quick service, and regular flights. The flights are interrupted after 11 am, because of the strong winds.

Marpha, a small village, two hours walk from Jomsom, is famous for its unique architecture. Marpha Apples are one of the popular food items of Jomsom. Heavy winds blow in these regions. Kagbeni village, which is two hours’ walk from the valley, is entirely and calm and is another famous village from Jomsom.
