Biratnagar

Biratnagar, recognized as the Jute City of Nepal, is the third-largest city of Nepal. The metropolitan city, Biratnagar, is bordered by India in the South. Biratnagar, an industrial town, is the city with the first large-scale Nepal – Jute Mills industry. Named after King Virat, the city is the capital of Province No. 1.

 

Rich in infrastructures and industries, the city is a blend of Nepali and Indian cultures with people speaking Nepali, Hindi, and Maithili. Different ethnic groups of people like Brahmin, Chhetri, Newar, etc. live in peace and harmony. All religions people can be found in the city.

 

Different Hindu festivals like Krishna Janmasthami (Birth anniversary of Lord Krishna), Janai Purnima, etc. are celebrated with the involvement of a large mass of people. Local pilgrim sites in Biratnagar like Kali Mandir and Janaki Mandir are full of devotees during special occasions like Dashami.

 

Entrance point of multiple destinations of Eastern Nepal like Baraha Chhetri, Illam, Dharan, Basantapur, and Koshi Wildlife Reserve, the city has bustling weekly markets where one can find varieties of spices, handicrafts, and imported items from India.

 

The best time to visit the city is during winter from November to March as the weather is cold and dry. Winter is cold at night, with a temperature falling very low. Summer is sweltering and humid, and monsoon brings a lot of rain. It is better to avoid visiting Biratnagar on peak months of summer and monsoon.

 

Biratnagar has pleasant streets with several transportation facilities. Local rikshaw and tempo are available for a short distance within the city, and buses are available for inter-city travel. To reach the town, one can get a flight from Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu to Biratnagar Airport. Local buses and other four-wheelers are available every day from almost all the corners of the country in Terai and hills.
