Ghorepani - Poonhill Trek

Poonhill, located in Mygadi District of Gandaki Province, lies at an elevation of 3,210 m from sea level, is under Annapurna Conservation Area. Ghorepani – Poonhill Trek, a three-day trekking package, is one of the most popular trekking destinations from Pokhara that receives an ample amount of local and international tourists annually.

 

Ghorepani – Poonhill trek begins from Ulleri. You will find a public bus from Baglung Bus park that will take you to Ulleri in 4 hours, with a break of 15 minutes for lunch in between. Ulleri is a small village with a peaceful environment, amazing views of the hills, and dense jungles. From Ulleri, you will reach Ghorepani after 4 to 5 hours of average trekking. 

 

Ghorepani, a hilly village of ethnic groups - Magar and Gurung, lies in Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), at an altitude of 2,874 m from sea level. Ghorepani forms from two Nepali words – Ghora and pani that mean horse and water, respectively. Known as the resting zone for trekkers and traders from ancient times, Poonhill is 45 minutes trek from here. The star attraction of Ghorepani is the panoramic views of the mountains like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna south, etc.

Tourists usually trek to Ghandruk from Ghorepani while returning to Pokhara. From Ghorepani, you can reach Ghandruk within 6 to 8 hours of trek via Tadapani Village. From Ghandruk, you can find a local bus that takes you to Pokhara within 5 hours and the private jeep that will take you to Pokhara within 4 hours.

 

The entire trek is easy, with average accommodation services, good food, and shops for almost every stuff you want to buy for the trek. It is better to make pre-bookings of hotels in case of peak months when the trails are flooded with tourists.

 

This trekking region is perfect every season except monsoon, i.e., Mid-June to Mid-September. The trail from Ghorepani to Ghandruk is quite difficult during winter because of snowfall. The best time is spring when the trail is covered with blooming rhododendrons.
