Kopan Monastery

Kopan Monastery, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in the capital city – Kathmandu, is a home to study Buddhism, perform meditation, and practice better living. Established in the late 1960s, the monastery was built by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche to shelter monks and nuns from the Himalayas to learn about Buddhism.

The objective of the Kopan Monastery is to preserve and transmit the Tibetan Buddhist tradition to end suffering and reach ultimate happiness and freedom. One receives integrated education and learn to utilize their highest potential for one's benefit. People come to the monastery to receive ultimate compassion and wisdom and develop their full potential.

The place is peaceful, calm, relaxing, and one can spend in the monastery for a few hours to a few weeks. To be a part of the community, one can visit as a guest, stay for a long time, attend a course, be part of the prayers, meditate, or listen to others' journeys.

People come to the monastery to receive courses, make a retreat, stay privately for self-study or reflection, escape everyday routine, and explore oneself in the best ways. The visiting hours are between 9 am to 5 pm, and one can attend the Daily Dharma Talk at 10:30 am on weekdays to learn more about the community. The monastery offers a clean and healthy food diet with individual items on the menu.

Except between November 11 to December 20, groups are admitted either from schools, organizations, overseas or only as visitors. The guest accommodation block lies in the garden area, and the type of accommodation is from Deluxe Suite to Dormitory. As Kopan is a monastery and not a hotel, the services are completely different from those of hotels. The three meals are provided to the guests, at a reasonable price ranging between 7 to 20 USD/day.
