The largest lake in Nepal, Rara (Rara Tal), is situated in the northwestern part of Nepal in Karnali Province, at an altitude of 2,990 m within the smallest national park of the country - Rara National Park. It covers an area of 10.8 km2 and is up to 167 m deep. Having an oval-shape with an east-west axis, the lake has a length of 5 km with a 3 km width.

Anyone visiting the area will be awestruck by its blue mirror-like water and amazingly green hills and beautiful pine forests around it. Rara National Park was established in 1978 to preserve the lake's natural condition and the local biodiversity. Surrounded by majestic conifer forests, the lake is home to only one species of fish – Snow Trout. Winter brings all the colorful and beautiful migratory birds to the lake, making it a birdwatcher's paradise. Summer is peaceful with Himalayan flowers surrounding the lake and making it prettier.

The locality is mainly populated by Magar, Gurung, and Thakuri ethnic people. Local homestays provide an opportunity to observe and experience the tough but rewarding lifestyle of the remote area. Chuchemara Peak – the highest peak of the region, located at an elevation of 4,039 m on the southern side, provides an excellent backdrop to the lake. The lake drains to Mugu – Karnali River through the Nijar River.

The easiest way to reach the lake is by flight to Talcha airport, Jumla from Nepalgunj airport, or Surkhet airport, after which you can either hike for 2-3 days through a scenic route or hire a jeep to reach Rara Lake. Alternatively, you can directly take the full driving route from Surkhet. Due to the remoteness of the lake, unlike most other trails, it is less crowded.

 The best time to visit is spring and autumn, as the trail gets difficult in rain and snow. Several species of plants and animals are native to the area, and in spring, the rhododendron forests are lush with beautiful flowers, which adds elegance to the experience.

While you're visiting the 'Queen of Lakes', you can visit the historic Sinja Valley of Jumla, which is also famous for its delicious apples. Hiking trail from Jumla offers visitors the scenic view of forests and mountain ranges, and you can observe a variety of birds, animals, and plants on the way. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to spot a rare snow leopard or a red panda on the way.
