Shree Krishna Janmasthami

Shree Krishna Janmasthami is one of the exciting festivals for Hindus in Nepal and some other countries like India and Sri Lanka. The festival is celebrated in August but the date can slightly vary each year depending upon the Lunar Calendar. It is meant to commemorate the 8th birth of the Lord Krishna., one of the greatest gods of Hinduism.

 

The festival is celebrated to recall the great victory of good over evil which is presented in one of the epic mythological tales of Krishna. It teaches us that no matter how strong is the evil, the ultimate victory is of good. The Government provides a national holiday on this day to cherish the ancient traditional festival of Hinduism.

 

The most epic event on this day is the performances at midnight which shows the ancient battle of Krishna against the evil King – Kansa. It is exciting and brings everyone together. The crowd is full of devotees, viewers, who are especially youths. Even tourists are attracted to this event as it is full of drama and fun.

 

On this particular day, devotees perform fast, worship Lord Krishna, and offer food like milk, cheese, curd, etc. as it is believed Lord Krishna is fond of such dairy items. Performing fast and worshiping with pure heart mean fulfillment of the wishes from Lord Krishna.

 

The festival is full of music, dance, reenactments of the lifecycle of Lord Krishna, decorating temples, visiting different Krishna Mandir, exchanging gifts, and enjoying the holiday with family. Krishna Temples are full of decorations with flowers, and lights and the evenings on these temples are magical. People also worship miniature Krishna idols at home and decorate their temples and worship Lord Krishna.
